Frequently Asked Questions

SpecLevel PCT produces an architectural salt-and-pepper finish when polished. SpecLevel PCT-AGG is pre-extended with larger aggregate to create a more exposed-aggregate or terrazzo-like appearance. SpecLevel PCT-Gray provides a more uniform gray architectural finish. All three are cement-based, self-leveling toppings that can accept integral color or stains and may be polished in as little as 24 hours.

A polishable topping is useful when the existing concrete is uneven, visually inconsistent, worn, patched, or unsuitable for direct polishing. It creates a new, continuous wearing surface that can provide more consistent color and aggregate exposure than the original slab. SpecChem positions its toppings for retail, commercial, industrial, and repair applications where both appearance and durability matter.

The substrate must be sound, clean, and free of oil, grease, curing compounds, coatings, dust, and loose material. SpecChem requires concrete to be mechanically profiled to at least CSP #4, with shot blasting preferred. Cracks, joints, weak concrete, and significant surface defects should be evaluated and repaired before installation.

Yes. SpecChem’s polishable concrete system uses SpecPoxy 1000 as the bonding primer over the properly prepared substrate. A sand broadcast may also be incorporated to establish the required mechanical bond before placing SpecLevel PCT, PCT-Gray, or PCT-AGG. Primer selection and application must follow the complete system requirements rather than treating the topping as a direct-to-concrete product.

SpecLevel PCT and SpecLevel PCT-AGG can generally be installed from 3/8 inch to 1½ inches neat. For deeper placements, they may be extended with approved pea gravel up to approximately 5 inches, subject to the product instructions and project conditions.

Depending on temperature and jobsite conditions, SpecLevel PCT-AGG may accept foot traffic in approximately two to four hours, while SpecLevel PCT typically accepts foot traffic in about three to four hours. Both can be diamond polished in as little as 24 hours. Competitor products from Euclid and Schönox similarly emphasize 24-hour polishing for fast-track projects.

Yes. SpecLevel PCT, PCT-Gray, and PCT-AGG accept integral color and concrete stains. The selected product and polishing sequence determine whether the finished floor has a uniform gray, salt-and-pepper, exposed-aggregate, or terrazzo-like appearance. A project mockup is recommended to confirm color, aggregate exposure, sheen, and overall finish.

Moisture conditions must be tested and evaluated before installation. A polishable topping should not be used to conceal an active moisture problem, and excessive vapor transmission can affect the primer, bond, appearance, and long-term performance. When testing identifies unacceptable moisture, an approved mitigation system may be required before SpecPoxy 1000 and the SpecLevel topping are installed.

Existing cracks and joints must be evaluated before placement. Stable cracks may require repair or treatment, while active control, construction, expansion, and isolation joints generally need to be honored through the topping. A polishable overlay cannot prevent movement in the underlying slab, so covering active joints or cracks can lead to reflective cracking.

SpecChem’s system begins with SpecPoxy 1000 for priming and bonding, followed by SpecLevel PCT, SpecLevel PCT-Gray, or SpecLevel PCT-AGG. The finished topping can then be densified with LithSeal SC or another approved hardener and protected with products such as All Shield EX or a compatible guard. Using one coordinated system helps improve product compatibility and gives contractors a single source for technical support.
