Step-by-Step Guide: Installing SpecLevel PCT-AGG and Achieving a Terrazzo-Like Finish

Achieving a beautiful and durable polished concrete floor doesn’t have to be a daunting task. SpecLevel PCT-AGG, a polished concrete topping with aggregate, is designed to give you an architectural finish that rivals traditional terrazzo. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you install SpecLevel PCT-AGG and achieve a stunning polished concrete overlay.

Step 1: Preparation is Key

Before you start, make sure the subfloor is clean, dry, and free of any debris or contaminants that could affect the bonding of the SpecLevel PCT-AGG.

  •    Clean the Surface: Sweep, vacuum, and then wash the subfloor to remove any dust, grease, or oils.
  •    Repair Cracks and Holes: Use a patching compound to fill in any cracks or holes.
  •    Prime the Subfloor: Apply with SpecPoxy 1000 as a primer to ensure proper adhesion of the SpecLevel PCT-AGG mix.

Step 2: Mixing the SpecLevel PCT-AGG

A uniform mix is crucial for achieving a smooth, polished concrete topping with a terrazzo-like finish.

  1. Measure Materials: Mix each 50 lb bag of SpecLevel PCT-AGG with 7.0-7.5 pints of cold water. Always add water to mixing container before adding SpecLevel PCT-AGG.
  2. Mix Consistently: Mix for a minimum of 3 minutes with a blending paddle attached to a heavy duty drill (650 rpm), or a Helix Mixer until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Check Consistency: The mix should be flowable but not too runny.

Step 3: Pouring and Spreading

Now it’s time to pour the prepared mix onto the subfloor.

  • Pouring: Start pouring the mix at the farthest point from the exit and work your way back.  Always pour material into itself to avoid cold joints
  • Spreading: Use a squeegee or a gauge rake to spread the material evenly across the subfloor to the desired thickness.
  • Leveling: Employ a spiked roller to remove any air bubbles and ensure a level surface.

Step 4: Achieving the Terrazzo-Like Finish

Patience is key to getting that beautiful, polished concrete overlay. Fortunately, no troweling is necessary as SpecLevel PCT-AGG will level itself during the first 20 minutes.

  • Let it Cure: Allow the SpecLevel PCT-AGG to cure 24 hours before beginning the polishing process.
  • Polishing: Start with a coarse grit diamond abrasive tool to grind the surface, followed by progressively finer grits to achieve a high-gloss, terrazzo-like finish.

Step 5: Densification

Spray a SpecChem Densifier (LithSeal Lite, LithSeal SC, or SpecHard-Intraseal) with overlapping circular motions after 50 and 100 grit Overlay Transitional tooling. Lightly use a pad applicator fitter with a microfiber pad to spread evenly on surface. The densifier does not need to be scrubbed in vigorously and will not form a gel. As the densifier is absorbed into surface apply an additional coat as needed until concrete topping no longer accepts the product.  Keep floor wet for 15 minutes, spreading with mop to avoid puddles. Allow the surface to dry.

Tips & Tricks for the Best Finish

Optimal Working Conditions

  •    Temperature: Aim for a working temperature between 50°F and 90°F.
  •    Humidity: High humidity can slow down curing times, so try to maintain moderate humidity levels.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  •    Poor Surface Prep: Skimping on preparation can lead to poor adhesion and surface defects.
  •    Inconsistent Mixing: Uneven mixing results in weak areas and potential failure.
  •    Skipping Curing Time: A rushed curing process can compromise the strength and finish of your floor.

With careful preparation, consistent mixing, and patience, you can achieve a stunning polished concrete overlay with a terrazzo-like finish using SpecLevel PCT-AGG. This high-quality product provides a durable, aesthetically pleasing architectural finish perfect for both commercial and residential projects.

Give your floors the elegance and durability they deserve with SpecLevel PCT-AGG.
