Frequently Asked Questions

A surface retarder temporarily delays the set of the cement paste at the top of freshly placed concrete while allowing the concrete below to harden normally. The softened surface mortar is later washed away to reveal the aggregate. SpecEtch, SpecEtch Deep, and Versa Etch provide different exposure depths for decorative concrete finishes.

Choose the exposure depth based on aggregate size, desired texture, concrete mix, and finished appearance. SpecEtch typically exposes approximately 1/4 to 3/8 inch, while SpecEtch Deep provides approximately 3/8 to 1/2 inch of exposure. Versa Etch is available in seven depths ranging from a light acid-wash appearance to approximately 5/8 inch. A mockup is recommended before full placement.

SpecEtch is intended for moderate aggregate exposure and mix designs using approximately 1/4- to 1/2-inch aggregate. SpecEtch Deep creates a deeper reveal and is recommended for 1/2-inch or larger aggregate. Versa Etch offers seven color-coded exposure levels and does not require plastic covering after application.

Apply the retarder evenly after screeding and finishing are complete and surface bleed water has disappeared. Do not overwork the concrete, because this can push the aggregate too far below the surface. SpecEtch, SpecEtch Deep, and Versa Etch are typically spray-applied with a low-pressure or garden-type sprayer while avoiding puddles and uneven coverage.

Wash-off timing depends on the product, temperature, concrete mix, and desired exposure. Versa Etch is generally removed after approximately 6 to 24 hours, while SpecEtch and SpecEtch Deep are commonly removed after approximately 12 to 24 hours. Hot conditions may require earlier removal, while cool weather can extend the waiting period. Test a small area before washing the entire placement.

It depends on the product. SpecEtch and SpecEtch Deep should be covered with secured plastic sheeting after application to prevent premature drying. Versa Etch is designed for use without plastic covering, which can simplify installation on large decorative-concrete projects.

Warm, dry, or windy conditions can accelerate concrete set and shorten the available wash-off window. Cooler or humid conditions can delay setting and extend removal time. Versa Etch Extender can be applied over dried Versa Etch to extend the removal window when hot weather or fast-setting concrete makes additional time necessary.

Aggregate size, sand content, cement content, water-cement ratio, admixtures, concrete temperature, and setting characteristics can all influence the final reveal. The chosen retarder must match the aggregate size and desired texture. A representative mockup using the actual concrete mix helps confirm product depth, coverage, application timing, and wash-off procedures before the full pour.

Use a consistent concrete mix and finishing method, apply the retarder evenly at the recommended coverage rate, and avoid puddles, missed areas, or overworking the surface. Wash the placement uniformly rather than allowing different sections to remain retarded for substantially different periods. Versa Etch uses color-coded formulas and provides typical coverage of approximately 200–300 square feet per gallon to help contractors select and apply a consistent exposure depth.

Once the underlying concrete has hardened sufficiently, remove the softened mortar using clean water and a stiff-bristle broom or a carefully controlled pressure washer. Avoid excessive pressure that could loosen or undercut the aggregate. After the concrete has dried and met the sealer requirements, the finished surface may be protected with a compatible SpecChem sealer such as Crystal Shine, Deco Shine, or Aqua Shine.
